On November 30 2018, 70 young women attended a special event called ‘Being You’, which was created by a group of female mentors from the community. These young women realised that there were limited opportunities for young women of Somali Australian backgrounds to gather, discuss wellbeing and mental health & offer feedback on how services can better support them.
The evening included two incredible guest speakers, Hani and Paula. They spoke about their own personal stories, the challenges that African Australian young women often face, how to take care of your wellbeing and where to get support if you are having issues with your mental health.
The event was MCed by two talented young women who helped run the event, named Sahra and Ilhan. There were games, wellbeing activities, a photo booth and gift bags full of ‘wellbeing essentials’.
Throughout the evening, the young women gave feedback on how services can better address mental health in African Australian communities – the outcome will be available soon which is a document that explores the recommendations. Local services in Banyule will be given copies of this document and a working group is being formed for early in 2019 to address specific service supports for African Australian young people who are living in our region.
