Smoke Free Outdoor Areas in Banyule

As smoking is one of the leading causes of preventable deaths and illness in Banyule,
Council is seeking community feedback on options and ideas for reducing the impact from smoking in outdoor areas.

Free calls to Lifeline from mobiles

Mobile phone calls to Lifeline, made from anywhere in Australia, are now free of charge under an agreement made between the three major phone carriers. The measure, introduced since July 1, is an attempt to remove cost as a barrier to seeking help and ensuring people can access the support they need. The Government has also provided $18.2 million over three years to Lifeline to boost the capacity of the organisation to respond to more calls and to support free calls from mobiles, and relieve potential financial burdens.

What is the Census?

The Census of Population and Housing aims to accurately count the number of people in Australia, their key characteristics, and the dwellings in which they live through a nationwide survey. Census night is Tuesday, 9 August, 2011. Every household in Australia receives a Census Form in which there is a series of questions that relate to housing and population demographics.

The 'Tell Someone' Website is aimed at educating people with a mild intellectual disability and their family and community about family violence. It clearly articulates that families come in all shapes, sizes, and types including people living in residential settings with carers. It includes plain English information and a series of videos with very clear messages from people with disability sharing their experiences.

Dealing with Exam Stress

Exams are a time when stress levels are higher than usual. Stress can be positive, helping students to stay motivated and focused. However, too much stress can be unhelpful - it can make your students feel overwhelmed, confused, exhausted and edgy. It's important to try and keep things in perspective for and to find ways of reducing stress if things seem to be getting on top of you.

Grants to run an activity on International Day of People with a Disability

Applications are now open for International Day of People with a Disability MetroAccess mini-grant.
Community groups and organisations are encouraged to apply for a grant to assist them to fund an inclusive community activity during the week of 29th November - 5th December 2010.
Activities should engage the broader Banyule community rather than just targeting the existing membership and should celebrate inclusive communities: including disability, cultural and linguistic diversity, gender, religious diversity and more.

Every Friday during school term except for public holidays.
At Northland Youth Services, Northland Shopping Centre, Preston
Activities for all parents under 25 years who live, work, study or play in Banyule. Light lunch, health, baby and child information, chat with maternal and child health nurses (optional). Access to microwave, milk, hot drinks and changing space.
Come and relax with other parents your age. Young parents in this group have been able to form great friendships and get advice.

SunSmart Competition - entrants must be aged between 12 -17

Bust a myth about skin cancer!
SunSmart and the Cancer Council are looking for the best writing, images and short films that dispel one of '10 myths about sun protection'.

If you're aged between 12 and 17 years, enter a short film, an image or a creative writing piece that 'busts a myth' and be in the running for some fantastic prizes.
