St Helena College new group PRISM
What started as a concern and frustration between a couple of year 12 students, developed into a united group of students who have formed a group called PRISM (People Respecting Individuals' Sexuality Movement). These students felt concerned that their school needed to do more to help make their school a safer place for all students. They want school to be a place where every student is accepted and comfortable to be themselves, as the staff and students work in a trusting environment. Since starting this project, many other staff, parents and students are fully supportive of a student led project which not only tackles discrimination against young people on the basis of their sexuality but is a also a prototype for respecting diversity amongst all students and staff.
The group of students aim to tackle homophobia through education. Anti homophobia posters feature throughout the school and stickers have been distributed amongst the student population. In the near future the staff team will be given professional development in addressing homophobia in the school setting, inclusive behaviour will be encouraged in the curriculum and guest speakers will be invited to address the student body. Members of PRISM will also use social media to support and educate their peers.
